In a special monthly series, ACS will feature a faculty member. We asked questions about why they are passionate about the subjects they study and teach, and how they found their path to ACS.
Faculty Spotlight: Mrs. Debbie Pillaro
What is your educational background?
I have been blessed to be part of the Acadiana Christian School family for the eight years. Prior to my time at ACS, I taught for the Diocese of Lafayette for eighteen years. I have been in the classroom for a total of twenty-six years. I graduated from New Iberia Senior High, and the University of Southwest Louisiana (currently UL).
What inspired you to teach?
When I began college, my initial desire was not to teach. I began my college career as an engineering major because of my love of science and math. That, however, was not God’s plan. After much consideration, I decided to explore my love of writing and English. I also received inspiration from my high school English teacher at NISH. Her love for learning and the joy she found in teaching contributed to my decision to pursue a career in education.
What do you love about teaching at ACS?
I truly enjoy having the opportunity to work in a Christ-centered environment. It is so encouraging to have such supportive administrators and co-workers.
What do you hope students gain from being in your class?
I hope that my students gain more than simply academic knowledge. While fifth and sixth grade are foundational years preparing students academically for the rigors of middle school, my greatest hope not just to prepare them academically. It is to continue to water the seeds that are being planted by God. I hope that in some small way I can contribute to helping my students grow to love the Lord.
Tell us a fun or interesting fact about yourself!
Well, I think that most of my students know that I have several favorite things that I REALLY like. My favorite vacation destination is the beach. When I am forced to be on unsandy soil, I comfort myself with coffee and Dr. Pepper. My sixth graders also know that my favorite animal is currently the flamingo. They are so brightly and beautifully colored by our Creator that they bring joy.
If you could have dinner with three people, alive or not, who would they be and why?
My choices would be: Ruth, Deborah, and Rahab. These three courageous women of God stepped out in faith and trust which allowed them to accomplish seemingly impossible things.
